Collage Faqs

What Is A Mixed Media Art/Photo Collage?
Mixed media photo collages are for people who want to go beyond the traditional scrapbook and store-bought wall hangings and turn their memories into living works of art. Mixed Media photo collages may include products that are not guaranteed to be acid-free or lignin-free, such as old memorabilia, found objects, material from personal clothing, and things straight from nature.

Photographs are an important role in this style of collage, but it's not the main focus of the page. Instead, the photograph(s) compliments the overall theme of the collage as various objects and contrasting techniques are used to bring the theme together and can have a three dimensional feel.

How Are Collages Made?
Each collage uses up to four of your favorite photos, acrylic paints and various background media: molding paste, glues, scrap papers, stamping techniques, and up to three top embellishments, like beads, chipboard, ribbon, metals, cloth, etc. Think abstract art, three dimensional wall hangings, or custom scrapbook designs.

Can You Tell Me More About The Canvases You Work With?
Each Canvas Is...

Piece of Collage by Alyice EdrichUnframed:
Because the canvas stretches around the wooden frame, and the collage is carried onto the sides of the canvas, framing is not necessary. If you'd like to frame the canvas, your local framing shop can help you customize the right frame to fit the look and feel of both your home decor and your collage.

    Sealed For Protection:
The collage is sealed with three thin coats of satin (semi-gloss) varnish and ready to hang on your wall!
Do You Require A Retainer?
Yes. I require a non-refundable $25 retainer for projects ranging in size from 9x12 framed artwork to 12x12 canvases. Larger pieces require a larger retainer, based upon material costs. The retainer holds a spot in my schedule to complete your project and locks in my rates. If you cancel your commission or return it, your retainer will not be refunded.

How Much Do You Charge For A Custom Collage?
Price starts at $59 per customized 12x12 collage.
Shipping and handling is just $10 per collage when shipped within the United States.
SD sales tax applies if you live within the state of SD or items are shipped to a SD address.

What Do You Need From Me For A Custom Art Canvas?
Please review the order page for specific details on ordering your custom art.

Do You Do Any Scanning?
I will scan the materials you provide for your collage. I will scan personal photos, children’s artwork, handwritten notes and poetry, personal memorabilia, etc. That being said, the quality of your images will depend on the quality of the material you submit.

Who Owns The Copyright To The Collage?
I, as the artist, own the copyright to the collage. You are purchasing one-time personal use rights to the artwork I create for you, not commercial rights. That means you cannot give away or sell copies of the artwork I create for you.

What If I Want To Make Cards From The Artwork I Purchased?
Since I own the copyright to the artwork, you do not have the right to use the artwork for anything other than displaying it in your home. You cannot send the artwork to printers for printing. But don't worry, I have a few printers that I work with.

For small orders, I have teamed up with Zazzle, a print-on-demand printer. Just let me know whether you want your collage as a postcard, a note card, or a greeting card. I'll scan the image, resize it, and upload it to my account. Then I'll send you the direct link for ordering. For large orders, I'll get a price quote from my printer in town and get back with you. If you're happy with the quote, I'll have the cards ordered and delivered to you within 4 weeks.

Do You Offer Refunds?
Yes. A partial refund.
If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, you may return the item within 7 days of receiving the item―at your cost, for a partial refund. You will then receive reimbursement for the item returned, less your non-refundable deposit―as the time devoted to each project is unrecoverable and the materials used in your project cannot be reused. If, however, the item is not returned in the same condition it was shipped out to you in, there will be no refund. I reserve the right to resell any returned artwork to another buyer.

Why Should I Buy Personalized Photo Art?
The simple answer is that it will add beauty to your home while preserving treasured memories. The long answer can only be given by sharing the following story with you...

In 2007, my brother-in-law lost his wife of 35 years to health complications and my 25-year-old neighbor lost her soul mate of 7 years to a tragic motorcycle accident; leaving her to raise her one-year-old son, Caleb, alone. Tired of offering heartfelt condolences, simple sympathy cards, and food items as comfort, I decided to do something different. I wanted to honor their memories and preserve them at the same time. And so, I created photo art in the form of slideshows and mixed media photo collages.

When I delivered the photo collage for the young woman who lost her husband, she was so overcome with emotion that she had to leave the room. After composing herself, she couldn't wait to show it to everyone, especially her mother and grandmother. When her grandmother saw the photo collage, she said, "Oh, Alyice! The canvas and the slideshows are going to be so important to Caleb when he gets older. He's going to have something very special to remember his dad by. It won't simply be a box full of old photos. You don't know how precious a gift this is."

It was then that I realized how important it is to help people, my family included, preserve their past in ways that can be cherished every day. I want to use people's personal lives as art so that in art they will live on forever. I want my photo art to be something to be proud of; something worthy of passing down from generation to generation instead of hiding away in a box somewhere, lost to the world forever.
