FAQS: Photo Slideshows On DVD Just about everyone loves taking pictures of their loved ones and capturing memorable events for a lifetime, but not everyone enjoys archiving those photographs. Whether it’s a categorized photo box, a shoe box in the back of a closet, a traditional photo album, or a scrapbook, some people simply do not want to be bothered. But what if you could spend a few hours out of your day to gather your most precious photographs, jot down a few notes, and then hand them over to a professional for archival? Would you do it then? What if there was a fire or natural disaster that caused you to rush out of your home in a hurry, wouldn’t you want to grab those precious photos now? Would you know where they are? Would they be too heavy to carry in a hurry? Thanks to digital technology, all your photographs can be in one location, ready to be grabbed at a moment’s notice. In fact, you could even put them in a safe deposit box at your local bank! But I am not talking about just any DVD, I'm talking about personal history; a personal legacy... What Do You Need From Me? Please review the order processing page for specific details on ordering your DVD slideshow. What Type Of Themes Can I Use For My DVD? Please review the themes page for ideas. How Compatible Is Your Service? I use high quality outputs for the best conversion possible. I also use DVD+R technology. To make sure your DVD player is compatible, please check VCD Help or Video Help. Do You Offer Refunds? No. The time devoted to each project is unrecoverable, therefore there are no refunds. What About Scanning, Will It Cost A Fortune? While other companies nickel and dime you into paying 25 cents to $2 per scan, plus an additional fee for minor editing of your photos, I include this service in the price of every slideshow package I offer! I can scan personal photos, children’s artwork, handwritten notes and poetry, etc. The quality of your images, however, will depend on the quality of the material you submit. Do You Do Any Photo Editing? Send me your original photographs (old or recent) and I will do my best to improve the quality of those images. Each photograph will be scanned and saved as a digital image. The images will then be repaired, retouched, enhanced, and/or altered in my digital darkroom. When your order is complete, your original photographs will be returned with your paid order. The following techniques are included in the price of my slideshow services:
You are purchasing personal use rights to the slideshow I create for you. You may not reproduce the work of art without proper written permission from me as you are not purchasing commercial rights. If you'd like to use a quote from a book, newspaper clipping, etc. I can do so under the "fair use" law provided you give proper attribution to the author. However, I cannot use entire articles or book excerpts in your slideshow unless you gain written permission from the author, newspaper, and/or publishing house. What About Music Selection? You can pick music from my growing selection of royalty free music. Just let me know what genre of music you like and if I don't have it, I will see what I can do about getting it. Or, if you'd prefer to leave the music off the slideshow altogether that is an option, too. What If I Do Not Like Your Music Selection? You can check out the royalty free website I recommend and choose your own music. However, there will be an additional charge to purchase the music for your DVD. What About Photographs From Professional Photographers? If you use an image photographed by a professional photographer, a written letter of consent must be provided with the image before I can use the image. Can You Include Video Clips? I currently do not include video clips or menu bars in the DVDs. Do You Offer Resell Rights? You may not resell your DVDs to others. If you’d like more copies, please contact me to purchase more copies. What Size Photos Can I Send? Please send photos from 5 inches in diameter up to an 8 x 10. Are Horizontal or Vertical Photos Better? Horizontal, or landscape style, photos work best for viewing purposes. However, vertical, or portrait style, photos work just as good. The only real difference is that horizontal photos take up the entire screen when showcasing one large photo and vertical photos tend to have a black border on both sides of the image. This shouldn't concern you, however, since I rarely place the entire photo on the screen as one huge image. View Samples Can I Add More Photos Than Stated In Your Packages? Yes. You can add up to ten extra photos per package, at a rate of $5 per photo. But please keep in mind that my packages are designed to get the most BANG out of your buck. Any more photos than those mentioned in the package really is too much. People begin to squirm and become bored with long, drawn-out video presentations. Which Is Better? A Digital Or Print Photo? If you are asking what would give you the clearest picture for your DVD slideshow, the answer is simple: .jpegs from original negatives. Take your negatives down to your local photo lab and have the attendant put all your photos on CD-Rom. Then load your CD-Rom to your computer, make a copy of every photo you want in your DVD slideshow and put it into a separate folder. Then burn me a copy. You'll get a much crisper image that way. Can I Send You A CD-Rom Of My Photos? Yes. But please save them as a .jpeg or .tiff file. And scan them at a resolution of 300 dpi. Any lower will drastically reduce the quality of your slideshow. Of course, if you've taken your photos with a digital camera, you won't need to worry about scanning. Just make a copy of the original file and send it along. Do You Accept Negatives Or Slides? No. I am not equipped to take your negatives or slides and turn them into useable photographs at this time. Please have your negatives and/or slides turned into prints or digital negatives before sending them to me. If I Scan My Own Photos, Will The Price Be Less? No. When you deliver your photos on CD-Rom, I will still need to edit them, load them to our computers, and organize them. However, if you feel safer scanning and delivering a Photo CD of your images, versus the actual pictures, by all means, please do! Why Must You Edit My Photos? All photos need to be processed to show up clear when viewing on your computer or television monitor. Also, to get the most out of your photos, they need to be scanned at the highest resolution available (no less than 300 dpi). When scanned at such a high resolution, tiny scratches, finger prints, and other imperfections that are nearly invisible to the naked eye really show up. Those imperfections need to be cleaned up so you can truly enjoy your DVD slideshow experience. Does Cropping My Photos Alter The Original? No. Please rest assured that I would never actually cut your original photos, for the purpose of showcasing them in a DVD slideshow. I will, however, crop the scanned file. Why Would You Digitally Crop My Photo? I crop photos to bring more emphasis on the subject and less emphasis on the distracting background. However, if the background is a huge part of your memories, just let me know and I will make sure to include the entire photo on the DVD. Can You Crop Out Someone Or Something I Don't Want Featured In The Photo? Yes. I understand that sometimes relationships die on a bad note or pictures are taken with strangers you'd rather not have featured in your family photo album. If cropping consists of simply cutting out the subject you want to keep, much like cutting with a pair of scissors, there is no additional charge. However, if cropping means removing someone or something from the photo and replacing the empty space with a background image, or another person or object, an additional fee will incur as this is a very tedious and difficult procedure. Seriously, Why Can't I Use My Own Music? If you wrote, recorded, and compiled your own music would you want someone else stealing it? Using someone else's work in your slideshow is like creating a derivative of that work. And to the best of my knowledge, that's simply not allowed. The truth: I was going to use mainstream music as long as my clients purchased and provided the original music CDs but the more I researched the legalities involved, the more it became clear that placing mainstream music on a photo slideshow made by third parties had too many legal loop holes (such as, is it really personal use when you hire someone to re-record the music for you?) and I didn't want to get caught up in the legalities of it all. Can You Ship My Order To Two Or More Different Addresses? Yes. For an additional fee, I can ship your purchased DVDs to different addresses. However, the photographs that were delivered to me will only be shipped back to you. What Do You Mean By...
This is the formal name of your slideshow. It could be something as simple as "An Afternoon With Nana". Opening credits This is a list of cast members. In other words, it's the formal names of Nana and her guests. Closing credits This is a list of everyone who made the DVD possible. This area acknowledges you, the people who provided the photographs, the people who provided the music, and us, AlyiceEdrich.net. If you've decided to provide music written and performed by your very own band, this would be a great spot to include credits to the musicians, lyricists, and composition writers. Introduction pages Introduction pages are designed to help transition between segments. This would be a stand alone page designed to introduce the next group of images. So if Nana spent the first part of her morning having tea on the terrace, then took her guests to the beach, the introduction page would introduce the beach by providing the name and location of the beach. Or the introduction could be a short poem by Nana describing the beach. Poems over 5 lines are broken down to use more than one slide. It could also be a series of phrases or sentences designed to tell a story. Story telling slides are usually 1-3 sentences long. Any longer and they become difficult to read. Captions Captions are words (or text) that appears on the image itself. This could be anything from a funny phrase, a favorite saying, a special quote, the name of the person in the photo, or the location of the scene in the photograph. Movement Movement provides action and often involves panning (following an object), zooming (moving the object near and far), or rotating of photos. Transitions Transitions are special effects that help make transitioning from one photo to another fun and exciting. |
